SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
But instead of hanging those colorful, blinking lights on the tree, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. wants you to exchange the old energy-guzzling kind for a more efficient set. PG&E says the new LED lights are just as bright but use 90 percent less energy and can burn for more than 100,000 hours.
Friday through Sunday, Oakland residents can exchange as many as five strings of holiday lights by catching up with PG&E representatives at farmers markets held across the city. Supplies are limited — 2,500 sets — so trades will be done on a first- come, first-served basis.
Free light exchanges also will be available at the Oaklanders Assistance Center at One Frank Ogawa Plaza, Room 123, on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The holiday light exchange is a joint effort between PG&E and the city of Oakland. The program, funded by PG&E ratepayers and administered by the city, was introduced last year.
“We feel it’s one way we can give back to the community,” said Marlene Du Four of the Oakland Public Works Agency. “Not only are the lights more energy-efficient, but they’re also safer because they emit less heat.”
The Department of Energy estimates that LED lights could reduce U.S. lighting energy consumption 29 percent by 2025.
Researchers have said LED lights could eventually replace standard incandescent lights as well as fluorescent and sodium vapor lights.

On Saturday, 11/21/2009, the San Gabriel Valley Energy Wise Partnership will launch its Holiday LED Light Exchange at Covina’s Christmas festival and tree lighting ceremony.
The event will offer San Gabriel Valley residents that are Southern California Edison customers the opportunity to exchange their incandescent holiday light strings for ultra-efficient light strings.
The event in Covina will be the first of five similar exchanges that will take place at various locations in the San Gabriel Valley during the months of November and December.
The partnership, a collaboration between the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and SCE, is providing the service to residents in an effort to educate them about the benefits of energy efficiency while reducing their energy usage this holiday season.
Individuals wishing to participate must provide proof of residency in an SCE customer territory in order to qualify. Each qualifying customer can exchange a maximum of two strings.
For dates and locations, contact the San Gabriel Valley COG at (626) 564-9702 or visit www.sgvenergywise.org.
LED Holiday Light Exchange
SGVEWP is offering to SCE residential customers located in the San Gabriel Valley the opportunity to exchange their incandescent holiday light strings for LED holiday light strings for free.
LEDs are exceptionally energy efficient and use up to 90% less energy than a comparable incandescent bulb. The amount of electricity consumed by just one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs—enough to light more than four 10-foot LED strings.
Qualifying customers may exchange up to two strings each. SGVEWP representatives will offer the LED holiday light exchange at five upcoming city-sponsored holiday events. These events are scheduled as follows:
